Once more, with feeling

A couple of years ago, I thought I'd start writing a blog. My first attempt at it was a spectacular non-event, it died after my first post. Well hey I was very busy at the time and other things got in the way. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Recently I've got some more time on my hands, mostly due to deciding to take some time off work to pursure other interests for a while. This seems like a good time to pick the blog thing up again, so here I am - and here is "Jan vs. Machine" (pun intended!). Why the new blog? Well, my last feeble attempt was set up on Tumblr and I've come to realise that it's somewhat less suitable for the kind of blogging I envision doing. I had a look around for other options and settled on blogger.com. While I wasn't ecstatic about getting tied into yet another Google-owned platform, it seems like the best choice for me by far. Why? Well, I want to spend as little time as possible on the setup and running of the blog site itself, so want something that works out of the box. So hosting my own Wordpress instance is not for me. Blogger also offered a super-quick way to set up the features of the blog that I want and seems flexible enough in terms of temlates, customisations etc.  So far I'm very happy with the choice of Blogger, it's been plain sailing to set things up.

And lastly - my old blog was called "Information and Noise", why the new name? Well, since then, a certain Mr. Nate Silver launched a book called "The Signal and the Noise" (highly recommended by the way), and as I'll probably talk about some of the same topics as covered there, it would perhaps look like a blatant case of plagiarism. In any case, here is "Jan vs. Machine"!
